Microsoft’s latest Work Trend Index shows that AI is already being used for more than simple content generation. Nearly half of AI interactions analyzed by Microsoft involve cognitive work such as analysis, problem-solving, decision-making and creative thinking. The research also points to a growing gap between companies that simply provide AI tools and organizations that redesign work around them.
For managers, this may be the most important trend of all. Giving employees ChatGPT, Copilot or another AI assistant is only the first step. The bigger opportunity is to redesign the workflow itself: AI collects and analyzes information, prepares the first version and handles repetitive steps, while the employee focuses on judgment, communication and decisions. The companies that benefit most from AI will likely be those that change how work gets done — not simply those with the most AI subscriptions.
